Content That Makes An Impact Starts With A Purpose
The best content does not start with 'what shall we post today?' It starts with the action you want people to take.
Most businesses approach content creation by asking the wrong question.
The wrong question is: what shall we post today?
The right question is: what do we want someone to do after seeing this?
That shift in thinking changes everything about how you create content and how well it performs.
Start with the action, not the idea
Every piece of content should have a purpose. Before you write a caption, film a video or design a graphic, decide what you want to happen as a result.
This could be:
- Visit the website
- Send a direct message
- Book a call
- Share the post
- Sign up to a mailing list
- Simply remember your name for next time
When you know the action, every decision that follows — what to say, how to say it, what to include, what to leave out — becomes clearer.
Define your target clearly
Who is this specific piece of content for? Not your entire audience. This post, this video, this piece of copy — who is it aimed at?
The more specific you are, the more it will resonate. Content aimed at every business owner often connects with none of them. Content aimed at a family-run manufacturing company in South Yorkshire with a sales problem speaks directly to the person who needs it.
Make your offer clear
If you want someone to take an action, you need to make it obvious what they get in return. This does not have to be a product or service. It could be:
- Useful information
- An interesting perspective
- A free guide or template
- A solution to a problem they have right now
Whatever it is, it should be clear and it should be relevant to the person you defined in the previous step.
Write copy that earns attention
Good content copy is plain, direct and useful. It does not try to impress. It tries to connect.
Use the language your clients use. Solve a problem they recognise. Share a perspective they have not heard before. Give them a reason to keep reading.
Avoid corporate language, buzzwords and anything that sounds like it was written by a committee. If it does not sound like a human said it, rewrite it.
Include a call to action that matches the objective
At the end of every piece of content, make it clear what you want people to do. Match the call to action to the objective you set at the beginning.
If you want them to book a call, tell them how to do that. If you want them to share the post, ask them. If you want them to reply with a question, invite them.
Most businesses produce good content and then leave people with nothing to do next. That is a missed opportunity every time.
The framework in brief
Target → Offer → Copy → Objective → Call to action
Use that order every time you create something and your content will become more consistent, more purposeful and more useful to the people you are trying to reach.
