A Simple Marketing Funnel For Businesses That Post On Social Media

Social media is not the whole funnel, but it can support every stage when you know what each post is meant to do.

Most businesses that post on social media are only doing one thing: creating awareness.

Awareness is important. But it is only the first stage of a process that should eventually lead someone to becoming a customer.

A marketing funnel is just a way of thinking about that process. When you understand it, you can use your social media content more deliberately — not just to get seen, but to move people through each stage.

The four stages

The most useful framework for this is AIDA: Awareness, Interest, Desire, Action.

Awareness is reaching people who do not know you yet. Reels, hashtag-driven posts, shared content, collaborations and paid ads all help here. The goal is simply to be seen by the right people.

Interest is giving people a reason to pay attention. This is where your educational content, your opinions, your behind-the-scenes posts and your expertise come in. You are giving people a reason to follow you, save your content and keep you in mind.

Desire is where people start to believe that you specifically can help them. Client results, testimonials, case studies, before and after comparisons, process explanations and social proof all build desire. You are moving from this is useful to I want this for my business.

Action is where you make it easy for someone to take the next step. This might be booking a call, sending a message, visiting your website or signing up to something. This is where your calls to action need to be direct and clear.

Why most businesses get stuck

Most social media strategies spend almost all their effort on awareness and interest — and very little on desire and action.

The result is an audience that likes your content, follows your account and occasionally saves your posts, but never quite gets around to making contact.

The fix is straightforward. Look at your last ten posts and ask: which stage of the funnel is each one serving?

If most of them are awareness or interest posts, you need to add more desire and action content to the mix. That means posting more results, more testimonials, more specific offers and more direct calls to action.

How to use this in practice

You do not need a complicated system. A simple weekly structure might look like this:

  • Two posts that build awareness (educational, broad, shareable)
  • Two posts that build interest (your perspective, behind the scenes, useful detail)
  • One post that builds desire (client result, testimonial, case study)
  • One post that drives action (specific offer, direct call to action)

Adjust the balance based on what your business needs most. If you have plenty of leads but low brand awareness, lean into the top of the funnel. If you have plenty of awareness but few enquiries, focus on desire and action.

The key insight

Every post you create has an opportunity to do something specific. When you know what each post is meant to do, you stop creating content that fills a schedule and start creating content that builds a business.

Social media is not the whole funnel. But it can support every stage of one.
